Dr. J. Mohan Kumar, Consultant Orthopedician Surgeon at Kauvery Hospital, Electronic City, discusses a common orthopedic issue: recurrent dislocation of the patella (kneecap). The knee joint, made up of the femur and tibia, normally keeps the kneecap in place as it bends. However, when the medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) is weak or torn, the kneecap can dislocate outward, particularly during rotational movements. Treatment involves immobilizing the knee initially, followed by gentle mobilization and strengthening exercises. MPFL reconstruction surgery provides excellent results with minimal complications.
