Total Knee Replacement Surgery

Tuesday, 23 August, 2022

The need for an individual to undergo total knee replacement (TKR) becomes urgent when he suffers from osteoarthritis pain. Such individuals go through a lot of pain and discomfort while walking, getting into a chair and out of it, climbing stairs, and knee pain.

What is TKR?

TKR is a difficult procedure performed by a skilled and experienced orthopedic surgeon. He removes any diseased parts of the bone and shapes it back to comfortably accommodate the knee implant he will place.

This procedure is advised by specialists only after all other treatments, such as steroid injections or physiotherapy, do not provide pain relief. TKR is known by different names, such as total knee replacement or knee arthroplasty.

Risks of TKR

There are several risks to TKR, such as:

  • Infection in the affected knee
  • Heart attack
  • Nerve damage
  • Blood clots in the leg vein
  • Stroke

Preparing for the Procedure

Your doctor will advise you not to take any medicines or dietary supplements just before the surgery. It would help if you also stopped eating by midnight before the morning of your surgery.

  • In the Hospital You will be given anesthesia before the procedure. Also, before, during, and post-procedure, you will be given intravenous antibiotics to prevent infection. Your doctor might also give you a nerve block to be placed near the knee to keep it numb.
  • During the Procedure Keeping your knee bent, the specialist will make a slit and move the kneecap while cutting all the damaged parts. Once he prepares the joint surfaces, he will attach the components of the artificial joint and then bend and rotate the knee to test it for best functioning. He will then close the slit, marking the end of the procedure.
  • Post-Procedure You will spend a couple of hours in the recovery room and perhaps be discharged the same day. Your doctor will draw up a medication chart for you to take for the next few weeks for pain relief.

Coping Strategies

Here are a few strategies to follow to recover well and quickly after your procedure:

  • For the first 10 days, you will feel the area under surgery swollen and uncomfortable. It would help if you kept your leg raised by placing a pillow below your calf. Ice the area three times a day to reduce the swelling.
  • Keep the knee joint straight. Don’t stand or walk without your wheelchair or crutches.
  • Wear your knee brace for as long as you can.
  • Do exercises and physical therapy.
  • Move your ankle and foot as this encourages blood flow to your legs and prevents blood clots.
